DVSA sets out plan to reduce driving test waiting times

Recruiting 450 driving examiners and improving rules for booking driving tests will reduce driving test waiting times to help new drivers get on the road.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has today (Wednesday 18 December 2024) set out a plan to reduce driving test waiting times.

The 7-point plan recognises that the government needs to take action to fix the driving test booking system and get new drivers on the road.

Stopping learner drivers being ripped off

Lilian Greenwood, Minister for the Future of Roads, said:

Passing your driving test is a life changing opportunity for millions – but sky-high waiting times for tests in recent years have denied that opportunity to too many people.

No one should have to wait 6 months when they’re ready to pass, travel to the other side of the country to take a driving test or be ripped off by unscrupulous websites just because they can’t afford to wait.

The scale of the backlog we have inherited is huge, but today’s measures are a crucial step to tackle the long driving test wait times, protect learner drivers from being exploited, and support more people to hit the road.

1. Recruit and train 450 driving examiners

DVSA will recruit and train 450 driving examiners across Great Britain.

The jobs were advertised on the Civil Service jobs website in 2 phases in:

June and July 2024

September and October 2024

DVSA is continuing to recruit and is now training candidates who were successful during the first of these recruitment campaign. They will start doing driving tests over the coming months.

2. Review and improve the rules for booking driving tests

DVSA will review and improve the driving test booking system to make sure that learner drivers can book their driving test easily and efficiently.

To do this, DVSA will follow these steps:

• Launch a call for evidence about the current rules and processes, which DVSA has done today (18 December 2024).

• Analyse the evidence and develop proposals to improve the rules and booking system.

• Run a consultation on the proposed improved rules.

• Introduce the improved rules – changing the law if necessary.

This work will take time to complete, and it will take some time for learner drivers and driving instructors to see improvements. But it will help to make the system fairer for learners and better protect them from being exploited.

3. Introduce tougher terms and conditions for the service driving instructors use to book and manage car driving tests for their pupils

DVSA will introduce a set of tougher terms and conditions for the service driving instructors use to book and manage driving tests for their pupils.

These new terms and conditions will come into force on 6 January 2025.

They set out that only driving instructors or businesses that employ driving instructors can use the service to book car driving tests.

The new terms and conditions make it clear that driving instructors and businesses must not book driving tests on behalf of learner drivers they are not teaching.

They also stop driving instructors and businesses from using a learner driver’s details to book a driving test that they have no intention of that particular learner driver using. This is sometimes done to create a placeholder so the test can be swapped to another learner driver later.

If anyone breaks the terms and conditions, DVSA can:

• issue them with a warning notice

• suspend their account

• close their account

4. Consult on new proposals to increase the amount of time people have to wait to book another test in certain situations

DVSA will run a consultation on new proposals to increase the amount of time people have to wait to book another test if they either:

make multiple serious or dangerous faults during their driving test

physically or verbally assault their driving examiner

fail to attend their driving test without telling DVSA – and consider charging them a penalty

Learner drivers currently have to wait 10 working days before being able to book another test. The consultation, which will launch at a later date, will set out the full details of the potential options.

5. Increase the amount of notice you need to give to change or cancel a car driving test without losing the fee

DVSA will increase the amount of notice people need to give to change or cancel their car driving test without losing their fee to 10 clear working days.

It’s currently set at 3 clear working days. DVSA consulted on proposals to increase this in 2022.

This change will:

encourage people to change or cancel their test sooner if they’re not ready

give more chance for appointments to be used by someone else

DVSA is working to bring in this change from spring 2025. The exact date has not yet been confirmed. DVSA will let learner drivers and driving instructors know when the date is confirmed.

Learner drivers will still be able to apply for a refund in cases such as illness or bereavement.

DVSA will continue to pay out-of-pocket expenses for any car driving tests it cancels with fewer than 3 clear working days’ notice while it conducts a review of its out-of-pocket expenses process.

DVSA will increase the amount of notice people need to give to change or cancel their car driving test without losing their fee to 10 clear working days.

6. Explore changing the current 24-week limit on how far ahead car driving tests can be booked

DVSA will explore ways of changing how far ahead car driving tests can be booked. This is currently set at 24 weeks.

Any changes DVSA makes will be made so it can better understand how many people want to take a driving test at each test centre.

7. Encourage learner drivers to be better prepared for their driving test through the ‘Ready to Pass?’ campaign

DVSA will continue to run its ‘Ready to Pass?’ campaign, which 95% of users rate as useful, to encourage learner drivers to take the right action to prepare for their driving test.

Research from DVSA shows that about 23% of learner drivers take their first attempt at the driving test within one month of starting driving lessons.

The campaign aims to change this behaviour, and focuses on helping learner drivers to:

understand what skills they need to have mastered

prepare for their test by giving tips on managing nerves

take a realistic mock driving test

understand what will happen during their driving test

It also encourages people who are not ready to pass to move their test back.

7. Encourage learner drivers to be better prepared for their driving test through the ‘Ready to Pass?’ campaign

The actions being taken will help DVSA to provide 1.95 million car driving tests between April 2024 and March 2025 and to reduce the waiting time to 7 weeks by December 2025

Both of these targets have been confirmed in the DVSA business plan for 2024 to 2025.

I have to admit, I often see Pop-ups as an interference when I’m looking at a site. This is usually because when I’ve just opened a site, I really don’t want a request to review it stopping me from actually seeing it! Used correctly though, they could significantly enhance the users experience and, of course, drive valuable actions on your website.

Here’s why I think pop-ups can be beneficial and some of the best practices for making the most out of them.

1. Grabbing Attention (at the Right Moment)

Pop-ups are designed to capture your visitor’s attention instantly. This could be to announce a sale, offer a discount code, or promote a new product. Done at the right time during a visit can ensure your message doesn’t go unnoticed. By being shown at a strategic moment—such as when a user is about to leave the page or after they’ve spent a certain amount of time on your site—you can engage your audience without being intrusive or disruptive.

2. Create Conversions

One of the primary reasons to use pop-ups is to boost conversions. Whether it’s to help build your mailing list, increase sign-ups, or to guide visitors toward specific content, pop-ups can help nudge visitors in the right direction. A clear call to action (CTA) within a pop-up, combined with an enticing offer, can turn casual visitors into loyal customers.

3. Promoting Special Offers and Content

Pop-ups are ideal for highlighting special offers, discounts, or content that might otherwise get overlooked. For instance, a limited-time offer pop-up can create a sense of urgency, encouraging visitors to take action immediately. Similarly, you can use pop-ups to promote downloadable content, like eBooks or whitepapers, which can help add value to your viewers visit and encourage them to return.

4. Gathering Valuable User information

Pop-ups can be a great tool for collecting visitor information, such as email addresses, preferences, and feedback. This can be invaluable in helping you adapt your marketing and improving the overall user experience. For example, a pop-up survey can help you understand why a visitor is leaving without making a purchase, giving you insights into areas for improvement.

4. Extend Their Role

Depending on the system your site is built on, it’s could be possible to incorporate additional services to make them even more useful e.g. use alongside an e-commerce system to set up custom CTAs and create unique, time critical offer codes for your site visitors to encourage them to take action more quickly.

Best Practices for Using Pop-ups

While pop-ups can be powerful tools, they need to be used thoughtfully to avoid frustrating your visitors. I was put off using them by sites that bombard you with pop-up after pop-up.

My own view of them has been changed, however, by having the flexibility to make the pop-ups work in a more useful and less annoying way

1. Timing is Key

When using a pop-up, you want the visitor to at least have had a chance to see what the page is about before a pop-up loads. Too long and it may be missed though. It could take some experimenting to get the ‘sweet spot’ for your audience but I have mine set for 15 seconds.

2. Keep it Simple

Pop-ups should be straightforward and directly related to the user’s experience so don’t cram them with too much information. A simple message with a clear CTA will work best whether that’s a button to take them to a specific page or a contact form built directly into the pop-up. Depending on the site & pop up content, you may also want to only show it on specific pages to increase the likelihood of the visitor engaging with it.

3. Offer an Easy Exit

If I can’t see how to get rid of a pop-up, I will genuinely just close the page and go somewhere else so make sure your pop-up has an easy way for the visitor to close it

4. Test and Optimise

As with any marketing tool, it’s important to test and optimise your pop-ups for your audience. Trying out different designs, CTAs, and timings can provide insights into what works best for your site visitors. Regularly reviewing performance metrics will help you refine your approach, ensuring your pop-ups remain effective and user-friendly.

Overall, when used properly, pop-ups can be a valuable addition to your website. By grabbing attention, increasing conversions, and gathering valuable data, they can significantly enhance your online presence.

However, it’s essential to follow best practices to ensure your pop-ups contribute positively to the user experience, rather than detracting from it.

Being conducted on a ‘one to one’ basis, Driving lessons are a very personal experience so a video can help create a personal connection even before the first lesson. Seeing you in a video can make the whole process feel more familiar and less intimidating, something that could be especially beneficial for nervous drivers. This personal touch can differentiate you from your competitors who may not offer the same level of accessibility.

Showcase Your Pupil Testimonials and Successes

Putting your passers photos and comments on your site or social media is definitely worth doing but Including testimonials and success stories in a video format can be really powerful. Prospective pupils are more likely to be influenced and convinced by real people sharing their positive experiences. A video that features satisfied clients talking about their success in passing their driving test or overcoming fears can be far more persuasive than text alone. It adds authenticity and relatability, encouraging new clients to envision themselves achieving similar success. These can also be shared on social media making more engaging posts and help drive traffic through to the site

Just do it!

Having a video on your website could be the best way to make your driving school stand out in today’s competitive market. It can build trust, showcase your skills and teaching style, enhance visitor engagement and create a personal connection that can be crucial in converting website visitors into pupils.

By investing time & effort into creating quality video content, you could significantly improve your driving schools online presence and help attract more pupils.

Adding a new page

Add a new page in WordPress

You can build your competency and confidence in WordPress by setting up a new ‘hidden’ page so you can play around before working on the live page

You can just start off with a blank page, however, it can be easier to duplicate and existing page so you have some content to get you started

Create the draft page

1. Click on ‘Pages’ and you’ll get the list of existing pages

2. Click on the ‘Duplicate this’ link. This will create a new page with status set to ‘Draft’ so it won’t be shown in the menu

Prepare the page and start editing

1. Set the page title: This is normally the page URL too – this won’t be of any relevance if the page is only for practice but worth knowing for future.

2. Set a featured image (optional)

3. Now you can start editing the page – click on the ‘Edit with Elementor’ button to start working on the page.

View your page

Because the page is set to ‘Draft’, it doesn’t show in the site menu* so, in order to view what it looks like on your devices, you will need to go directly to the page.

The easiest way to do this is from the editing menu,

1. Click the ‘hamburger’ menu in the top left and this will bring up a new menu

2. Click ‘View page’ to open the page. Note that this will open and replace your current window but if you hold the ‘Command’ key when you click it, it will open in a new tab.

You can then send the page URL to your other devices to see it on them too

*If the draft page is showing in the menu, 2 things have happened.

Firstly, the page has been set to ‘published’ and not ‘Draft’ and the menu is set to automatically add new pages.

This is not a major issue but you don’t want the page to be seen to does need to be sorted.

A few tips for WordPress newbies

I know from my own experience that the first forays into working with WordPress can be daunting and frustrating at times.

As someone who has always built websites and their management system from scratch, the switch was dramatic and involved a very steep learning curve.

These are just a few tips aimed at complete or near beginners using WordPress which I hope will save you some time and frustration allowing you to get on with the tasks you actually want to be doing on your site

Edit with google Chrome

I know this may come as a surprise as I work within the website industry but I make no secret of the fact that I see Google as a necessary evil and will avoid using any of their products or services wherever possible.

Working with WordPress is an instance where I’ve had to concede and I use Google Chrome whenever I’m doing any editing.

There is simply because there are some features in the editing panel that just won’t work with my default browser (Apple Safari).

Create a Practice Page

There is nothing worse than working on a page, making a change and then realising you’ve destroyed it!

To build up your confidence, it can be a good idea to create a page that you can practice with. You can do this by just creating a new page and setting it as a ‘Draft’ but we include a duplicator plugin that allows you to easily create a copy of an existing page.

What is a 'Plug-in'?

I hope a comparison that will help you understand this is to think of WordPress as your smartphone. It can work ok on it’s own, however, it can be massively enhanced with ‘apps’, which is how you can think of plug-ins.

There are literally thousands of plug-ins that can perform all kinds functions on your site from making it more secure to adding animations.

NOTE : It’s important to use these with a little care though as too many can impact your sties load speed

Check layout on different devices

All our sites include the ‘Elementor Pro’ plugin which is an editing plug-in that extends what is possible with the sites. While in editing mode, it is possible to switch to ‘Responsive’ mode so you can quickly see how your page would display on desktop / tablet / phone.

You are then able to edit specific elements so it will display better on that particular device. This can save great deal of frustration when you’ve spent ages editing a page only to find it looks awful on a mobile!

Made a Mistake?

You’ve been doing some work on your page and suddenly the format has gone haywire, or maybe you’ve just deleted a section my mistake and can’t seem to get it back.

Don’t panic! As long as you haven’t clicked the ‘Update’ button, you can simply refresh the page and it will load from the last save again (phew!!)

Hiding a page

Hiding a page from your WordPress site

There are several reasons why you might want to hide a page on your and/or stop it being indexed by the search engines.

You may have a page you are just using to try things out on or a page only for people you send a link to.

Whatever the reason, here’s how you can ‘hide’ it

1. Remove it from the Menu

In the main WordPress menu, click ‘Appearance > Menus’ to open the menus page.

Select the menu where the page is showing (normally the ‘Primary’ menu)

With the correct menu selected, you will see the page in the list on the right hand side.

Click it to open it’s info (I’ve used the ‘Resources’ page for this example) and click ‘Remove’.

This just takes it out of the menu and does not delete the page.

So you can add pages in the future without it being automatically added, untick ‘Automatically add new top-level pages…’ (you can switch this back on at any time if appropriate)

Don’t forget to click the ‘Save Menu’ button when done

The page will now not show in the menu
